Despite improved production processes capable of producing components with high grade finishes, the presence of burrs to be removed is still a frequent problem especially within foundries with sand castings.

Mechanical deburring can take place either in cells controlled by CNC machining centres, or often manually with grinding wheels or belt sanders. In the first case, the cost of automated equipment is particularly high and requires considerable investment, which is why manual operation is still widely used in this sector, with the use of grinding wheels or belt sanders which, due to their flexibility and manoeuvrability, are still convenient, especially for small or medium-sized parts that are not too heavy and are easy to manoeuvre.
